Otterbein welcomes a new face to its athletic department, Brian Booher, who will coach the women’s golf team this fall season.
A graduate of Penn State University in 1997, Booher majored in professional golf management and got his start as the assistant head coach of the boy’s golf team at Granville High School in 2001.
Booher spent two years coaching at Granville before being promoted to head coach in 2003 — he coached there until 2011. During his tenure, Booher accumulated seven state championship appearances over seven years.
After leaving Granville High School in 2011, Booher became the assistant head coach for both the men’s and women’s golf teams at Ohio Dominican University.
Now, two years later, Booher is the head coach of the Otterbein Cardinals women’s golf team.
“Otterbein is a school with strong golf traditions,” Booher said. “It has a good team with a good program built on success.”
Golf has been a passion of Booher’s since the age of 16 when he started playing with a couple of friends. He was also involved in soccer, basketball, track, baseball, cross country and gymnastics but found his passion in golf.
As a father of three—ages seven, five and two — Booher strives to find ways to fit quality time with them into his schedule.
“Having three kids makes it hard for me to catch up when there are weekends away,” he said. “I come from a coaching background and my wife is extremely understanding. Somehow we make it work.”
Following in his father’s coaching footsteps, Booher cites his parents, teachers and his golf coach for inspiring him to put education first.
“Everyone on the team is passionate about their studies,” Booher said. “Which is huge for me as a coach. I want them to be student-athletes, students first and athletes second. Not having to motivate them in academics makes my job a lot easier.”
Booher said his future goals include building on team fundamentals and implementing a better recruitment process.
