Suspicious package shuts down State Street

Westerville police responded to potential bomb threat outside Hanby Magnet School

A suspicious package was investigated late Friday afternoon at the intersection of Park Street and State Street in Westerville.

Westerville Police Chief Joe Morbitzer said a gentleman reported that he had placed a suspicious package in front of Hanby Magnet School.

A remote robot was used to observe and detonate the duffel bag from a mobile command post.

The contents of the package are being examined, but it is believed there were no explosives inside, Morbitzer said.

No information about the suspect has been released but an arrest was made.

“In situations like this we try to treat it as a public threat,” Morbitzer said.

The Columbus Fire Bomb Squad, dogs, highway patrol and even members of the Otterbein Police Department responded, according to Morbitzer.

Local businesses within the area were also evacuated and the area of State Street from Walnut to Main Street was closed during the investigation, according to the WPD.

City Manager David Collinsworth said a few administrators from Hanby Magnet school were evacuated and that everything was fine.

Collinsworth said it seemed like “a whole lot of nothing.”
