Mount St. Joseph was no match for Otterbein during the double-header at Rike Field on Thursday.
The Cardinals started out slow but quickly got it together with three runs in the third inning and two more in the fifth.
After a three run, sixth inning from Mount St. Joseph, Otterbein answered with a three-run homerun from freshman infielder Kayla Woodard making it 10 to three going into the seventh. The long-ball over the left-center field fence was Woodard’s first career home run with the Cardinals.
“We started off slow but then we started having fun and the home run really tied it all up for us,” said junior utility player, Paige Hamon.
In the second game, Mount St. Joseph started off with a run in the first inning, but Otterbein quickly responded with three runs in the second. It was a run each for both teams in the third.
By the fourth inning the score was 7-3, Otterbein. This lead was maintained throughout the rest of the innings by Otterbein, with Mount St. Joseph only scoring a run in the seventh.
Sophomore infielder Rachel Puthoff had a single-run home run herself during the second game.
Sophomore pitcher Chelsea Burns will be credited with the win. She struck out five batters during her six innings on the mound.
Otterbein now sits in first place in the OAC standings with 2-0 in the conference and 13-5 overall. They will play away against Mount Union at 1 p.m. this Saturday in Alliance, Ohio.
