Puppies help Otterbein students relieve stress

In order to reduce the stress of finals, puppies will be available to play with.

Thursday, May 2 at the Otterbein Campus Center from 4 to 6:30 p.m., Franklin County Dog Shelter and Adoption Center is bringing one to three well-trained dogs.

Helpful packets that are targeted to help with exam time will be given out during the stress-free event. These packets entail helpful tips on how to relieve stress and even a list of energizing snacks such as fruit filled crepes to cheese rollups.

Boxes will be placed around Otterbein’s campus and residence halls where students can donate towels, rags, blankets and even old t-shirts to make chew toys for the organization. Cleaning out old belongings can be a stress buster as well.

“We encourage students to take some time out of their day and not to freak out too much about exams,” Jill McCullough said. “Stop by and stop and smell the roses.”

McCullough explains that the intent of bringing the dogs to residence halls is to calm the students a bit during exam time and bring a smile to their faces. There are studies that show petting an animal can bring a smile to your face, make you laugh and lower your heart rate. All of these three outcomes are a saint during the stressful hair pulling during exam week.

The idea came from Director of Student Wellness Julie Saker.

The dogs brought to campus will be available for adoption.
