The Otterbein Cardinals, currently 17-4, received their second OAC Conference win tonight against the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace, 8-12, in dominating fashion, three sets to none.
“We have had a focus on better serving matches the entire year and really that’s all that happened,” said Monica McDonald, Otterbein’s head coach. “We had two sets tonight with zero service errors.”
In the first set, the Cardinals and the Yellow Jackets went back and forth early until both teams were tied at five a piece. From there, Otterbein went on a 10-4 run which set them up to take the first set by eight, 25-17.
The second was dominated by the Cardinals who after being tied at three early on exploded going on a 13-2 run which set them up to take the set by 17, 25-8.
The third started out with a 6-1 run by the Cardinals who expanded their lead to nine at one point during the set.
However, the Yellow Jackets would make a last-second comeback attempt going on a 10-5 run cutting the lead down to two, 24-22, but Otterbein would win the next point to take the set, 25-22, and the match.
“Even though we struggled in the third set we were in control the entire match,” McDonald said. “We never played from behind the entire match and I think that is important because it shows some composure.”
Annie Juenger led the team with 19 kills while junior Tabatha Piper led the team with 34 assists.
The Cardinals return to action at Muskingum University Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
