Otterbein parents have many opportunities to stay involved with students but some say parents 'take it too far'

As new students flood campus in the fall, many will have to adjust to campus life and keep their parents involved at the same time.

Many in the millennial generation of students coming to Otterbein have what many refer to as a helicopter parent. These parents have a need to be involved in their child’s education and life as they move on to college.

Jessica Takos, a junior middle childhood education major said, although she saw her parents twice a week her first few years at Otterbein, she doesn’t feel her parents were ever over-involved.

Takos does say she has seen other parents take it too far

“My friend’s parents called them every day through their senior year asking about classes, and would check up on their grades through blackboard,” Takos said.

Not all parents are helicopter parents, some aren't involved with their students at all.

Aleth Pashi, a junior nursing major, said, “My lack of consistent parent involvement has made the money aspect of school difficult, but has overall enhanced my experience. I can attribute my success and hard work to no one but myself.”

Even when parents aren’t involved, Otterbein takes the initiative to keep them informed.

“Otterbein sends an eNewsletter to parents that includes relevant articles from staff members, campus events and other Otterbein news," Leah Schuh, assistant director for the Center of Student Involvement, said.

Otterbein also hosts events in the hopes that parents can stay in touch with their students.

Schuh said that during orientation there are separate parent sessions about things ranging from tuition payments to understanding meal plans. Otterbein also offers a family weekend so students can connect with their families.

“Some students will thrive when their parent is involved and some will feel overwhelmed. As a staff member, I have seen both. It is important for the student and parent to talk about boundaries and the level of involvement each want regarding education and the college experience. Communication is key.” Schuh said.
