A popular annual community, Otterbein Summer Chorale, makes its return this summer for its sixth season.
Under the supervision of Dr. Gayle Walker, Director of Choral Activities, junior music education majors Lexi Clossin, Nick Mayes, and Sophia Fleshman will serve as the student conductors for this year's ensemble. It serves as an opportunity for the students to handle their own choir while receiving critique from their peers.
"It's a chance to work with an actual choir and not have as much of a leash on you," Mayes said. "We get to pick the repertoire which is something we don't do until student teaching if that."
The music selected by the students is at a "very high level for a community choir," according to Mayes. He said they chose some multi-cultural pieces for their ability to move and excite while educating people about music outside of the western culture.
Open to anyone high-school and up and audition free, OSC gives people in the local community an opportunity to sing without any of the added pressure that comes from audition-based groups.
"Music, in general, is it's own universal language, by having a community choir we are joining in something we all have in common," Mayes said.
Rehearsals begin May 22 and continue every Monday and Wednesday from 7-9:15 p.m. until the final performance July 10 at Church of the Master. For any questions or comments about OSC, contact osc@otterbein.edu.
