Where credit is due: Three-credit standard fails in Senate - Update

Update: The Senate Curriculum Committee addressed implementation of the passed major size proposal but did not address the issue of a three-credit model at a meeting on Sept. 20.

Otterbein's University Senate declined a proposal to change to a three-credit model with a vote of 62-55 on Sept. 14.

The vote concluded a contentious meeting with discussions covering the wide range of possible consequences for the credit standard, which ranged from topics of cost savings for the university to the ease of scheduling for students.

In the span of the meeting a bill drafted alongside the three-credit proposal to reduce major sizes was passed, a resolution that would have delayed the three-credit change until after changes in the faculty manual were made was passed and a resolution to send the three-credit proposal to a committee failed 67-43. A proposal to vote under a closed system passed.

President Kathy Krendl urged that a class was scheduled for 5:15 p.m. in Riley Auditorium before announcing the vote tally. No announcements were made as Senate disbanded.
