The Otterbein football team, who is now 0-3 on the season, dropped a close 14-7 game to #14 John Carroll to continue homecoming weekend for the Cardinals.
The Blue Streaks jumped out to the lead in the second quarter with a quick touchdown drive that went for 85 yards on nine plays in 3:50. John Carroll ended the drive with a four-yard rush by Michael Canganelli.
Later in the quarter, the Cardinals would score a touchdown of their own. The touchdown drive for the Cardinals lasted nine plays for 50 yards, ending when Luke Schmelling ran 14 yards into the end zone for a touchdown. The Cardinals attempted to take the lead with a 47-yard field goal attempt with 0:05 left before halftime. Nate Strong attempted and missed the kick.
After Otterbein’s defense produced a quick punt by John Carroll, Otterbein’s offense drove down the field. The possession ended with a failed 43-yard field goal attempt by Nate Strong.
John Carroll scored late in the third quarter to put away the Cardinals. Blue Streaks quarterback Jake Floriea completed a 33-yard touchdown pass to Keyshawn Colmon with 2:04 left in the third. Otterbein’s offense failed to produce any more points the rest of the game.
Both offenses struggled to produce much in the game. John Carroll had a total of 280 offensive yards while Otterbein put up 228. John Carroll converted on third down three of 12 times and Otterbein converted just three of 13.
Both teams combined punted the ball 16 times with John Carroll’s Andy Han punting seven times for 267 yards, while Otterbein’s Luke Green-Lauber punted the ball nine times for 379 yards.
The Otterbein Cardinals are now 0-2 in conference play, as their first loss to Ohio Wesleyan was outside the OAC, while John Carroll improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
