Otterbein football takes on Wilmington for senior day

Cardinals and Quakers are evenly matched for the last game of the season

The Otterbein Cardinals look to end their football season with a win as they battle the Wilmington Quakers Saturday afternoon.

Saturday will be senior night for the Cardinals. The two teams are evenly matched as they head into this game, with Otterbein having an average of 19.5 points per game (PPG) and Wilmington at 19.1. The Cardinals have 3,005 total yards offensively with the Quakers trailing by just 53 yards with 2,952 total offensive yards.

Led by a group of seniors, the Cardinals are 2-7, but they were close to a better record this season.

The Cardinals lost a close game to Ohio Northern when they had a late run in the fourth quarter and put up 22 points and even regained an onside kick. Ultimately, Otterbein failed to jump on a second onside kick and ran out of time, losing 35-45.

Last Saturday against Marietta, the Cardinals had a pair of botched field goal attempts, with one resulting in a blocked kick that was returned for a touchdown by Marietta. Otterbein found a way into Marietta territory but could not finish the drive, resulting in a 21-10 loss.

The senior-led defense put up a strong effort and almost toppled #14 John Carroll, holding the Streaks to only 14 points. Seniors Niall Lewison and Ryan Tuchow both had eight total tackles with Senior defensive linemen Austin Torr adding another five tackles and a three yard sack. Two missed field goal attempts and a slow offense contributed to the 14-7 loss.

Wilmington hasn’t found much success either on the gridiron, winning only two games in the conference, beating Ohio Northern and Capital. The Game will be played at Otterbein University with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m.
