At least 11 different Otterbein University departments to give out cords at 2022 graduation

Groups handing out cords range from the Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society to the registrar

There will be a wide spectrum of cord colors at the Otterbein University class of 2022 commencement as at least 11 different departments will giving out cords.

“A few years ago, I put a call out for graduation cords and their colors, and put together a list,” said Kristi North, the executive assistant in the Academic Affairs Office. “However, I know the list is not fully comprehensive, as organizations have changed, and some folks didn’t respond.”

According to North’s list, the communication department leads the departments in the number of cords that they give out with three. Students can earn a royal blue cord representing PRSSA, a red cord representing T&C Media, and a red, white, and gold cord representing Lambda Pi Eta for their participation.

In the psychology department, students can receive a platinum (grey) and dark blue cord representing the Psychology International Honors Society.

The Alpha Lambda Delta/Phi Eta Sigma Honors Society gives out a maroon, white and gold braided cord representing their organization for student participation.

The women’s, gender & sexuality studies department hands out a lavender cord representing Otterbein’s LGBTQIA+ student organization, FreeZone.

The student affairs department gives out a silver and gold cord representing the Mortar Board, an alumni association in Westerville, OH, which was founded in 1945.

In the art department, students receive a purple cord representing the Kappa Pi International Art Society.

The health and sport sciences department gives out a green and yellow cord representing the Eta Sigma Gamma Health Honorary.

Students in nursing receive a purple cord representing the honor society of nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International.

Gamma Omicron of Kappa Kappa Psi, Otterbein's band program, is represented through a blue and white cord.

Veterans and service members are represented with a red, white and blue cord handed out by the registrar.

For each card obtained within Otterbein's Five Cards program, students can receive a different cord: blue, purple, green, red and yellow.

The Otterbein University class of 2022 commencement is set to take place on Sunday, May 1 at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
