Why the Nest is changing and how it affects you

Otterbein started phase two of renovations on the Campus Center in July following students' vote for a more modern-looking Nest.

With the Campus Center initially being constructed in 1964, the renovations are expected to bring significant change to the student experience.

According to Otterbein's website, the Nest is being updated with the hope that it will help to foster community and connection, along with enhancing resources for student engagement and well-being. The website also includes how the renovations will increase energy efficiency and sustainability.

Currently, with construction underway, dining has been moved to the first floor. However, for students like sophomore Sophie Compton, the setup is less than ideal.

Compton said that she was, "ecstatic to see the remodel,” but she also had some concerns about food safety.

“As someone with food allergies, you can't help but think the new smaller area with stressed-out, overwhelmed workers leaves more room for cross-contamination. The employees are trained well, but it still is a little nerve-wracking,” Compton said.

Compton also said that the setup is not ideal because of how overcrowded and overwhelming it can be. She compares the new dining area to a game where the goal is to grab your food and walk to your table without bumping into someone or dropping something. Compton wishes there was a better setup or a discount on the meal plan because she does not want to go there as the place is a “crowded, hot, dingy room.”

Renovations on the Nest are not projected to be completed until January 2025. Other projects on campus had to extended their deadlines, leading some to doubt the promised completion date of the Nest.
