Otterbein adds a third to athletic communication staff

Otterbein names Wes Mayberry as director of athletic communications

Otterbein has selected Wes Mayberry for the role of director of athletic communications after the departure of Adam Prescott following the 2024 school year.

Mayberry comes to Otterbein after his time at rival Ohio Athletic Conference school Ohio Northern University, where he was the assistant director of sports information for three years, and a short stint at Wittenberg University where he served as the associate director of athletics communications.

The move to Otterbein was seemingly set for Mayberry, as Prescott had talked highly about Otterbein and the athletic department making the change to a three-person athletic communications team. This enticed Mayberry, along with the friendly nature of the staff.

“A three-person communications staff is uncommon at Division III schools, and the diversity of skills currently in our department should serve the university and its athletic department and student-athletes well into the future,” Mayberry said.

Coming into Otterbein, Mayberry wants to focus on student-athlete engagement and the coverage that surrounds them during games and other stories by using his writing skills to enhance the storytelling.

“My goal is to share more student-athlete stories to allow fans and community members to better get to know them and their achievements,” Mayberry said. “Aided by other members of my staff, I hope to enhance my written content with videos, graphics, podcasts and other multimedia offerings to increase engagement with our website, social media channels and athletic department and student-athletes.”

Mayberry has had an extensive role in the journalism and communications world, as he served most of his career in the newspaper industry. In Scottsboro, Alabama, Mayberry started as a general assignment reporter for the Jackson County Sentinel before moving on to The Mountain Press in Sevierville, Tennessee to become the sports editor.

Making stories and memories for Otterbein student-athletes is a major goal for Mayberry, and with help from his new staff, they are headed in the right direction.
