One of Otterbein’s most cherished parts of the year is coming this weekend.
Homecoming weekend activities start this Friday, however the traditional and more community-engaged parts of the festivities happen on Saturday. Activities include the Homecoming parade, OtterFest, the Homecoming game and much more.
A noteworthy part of Homecoming is the parade that will take place at 11 a.m., along a new campus parade route. Junior Zach Mulligan, the president of Eta Phi Mu, more commonly known as Jonda on campus, shared some insights on their tradition and what Homecoming means to someone who has been on campus for a couple of years.
“Homecoming is a great time to appreciate the history of our chapter and the campus of Otterbein, while also reflecting on how we continue to stick to tradition whether it be fraternity or the community of Westerville...” Mulligan said. “It’s a great reminder to appreciate all the people that came before, and remember why we want to keep building for the future."
Following the parade, OtterFest will then commence on the lawn in front of Towers Hall from 11 a.m, till around 2 p.m. Sally’s Ice Box, Pap’s Kettle Corn and cookout style lunch will be available for purchase. This will provide a space to congregate leading up all the way to the football game at Memorial Stadium.
After the festivities of the parade and OtterFest, the annual Homecoming football game will take place at 2 p.m. This year the Otterbein Cardinals are 0-2 heading into the match against the Marietta Pioneers, who are 1-0, coming off an early bye week to travel to Westerville for week three.
Senior Gavin Edwards shared his thoughts on what homecoming games have meant to him in his career, as well as grinding for that first win in a long time.
“I love the hype behind the homecoming game, a lot of alumni come out and usually there’s a good atmosphere of support..." Edwards said. "It would be huge to get that first win at home during Homecoming, especially against a solid team like Marietta, who we owe one back to from last year."
This Saturday, the Homecoming festivities will be in full swing. The event promises to be one of the most exciting activities on campus this year and will give students, families and alumni a chance to connect with the community and celebrate the campus.
