The online application called “Handshake” is what Otterbein uses so that students can apply for on-campus jobs or to find events that are happening on campus. The tool can be used so that different departments can send out job postings that the department needs.
Jamie Gleich, the human resources generalist at Otterbein University, says that jobs on campus can help be flexible around their schedule and offer alternatives for those who cannot find time to work.
“There are many departments, including Human Resources, that offer flexibility to the students on campus,” Gleich said. “I know in our department when students work, they do not have a set time on when they have to work, we can always work around them.”
Some jobs require specific skills that are posted in the job listing on Handshake, such as a human resources graduate internship, where students need a Master of Business Administration to apply for the job.
These jobs can be builders for future jobs in a student’s field. Junior AJ Tuel, who is a double major in sport management and business administration and management, has taken advantage of the on-campus jobs here at Otterbein.
“I definitely think working jobs here at developed me for the future,” Tuel said. “Not only the things I have learned, but the relationships I have developed with everyone across campus is something that will stick with me for a long time after I graduate.”
There are always jobs posted, but some that are always available are sporting events and working the Otterbein Community Garden, have given students opportunities to get involved with the campus lifestyle.
“Working the different sporting events gives students a chance to help support the sports teams here and a chance to get to know different students on campus as well. Students can also pick and choose which events they want to work based on their schedule,” Gleich said.
Jobs can change based on what semester they are in, the availability, and how many students are willing to work, but Gleich and the Human Resources Department are always ready to help students in their next step in job searching.
“If there is anything that we can help, come out and we will try out best to make something work that is efficient and beneficial to your process,” Gleich said.
